The client realized that the neighbourhood that she had moved into had a real community porch culture. From front porch people could socialize and she each other and wave etc. The client’s original porch was small and enclosed with spinals rendering the space inadequate. A new spacious porch was a ticket to the community.
Originally a new canopy was part of the project and was designed to be visually tied to the deck. However, due to budget constraints the construction of the canopy was moved to a later phase.
The new porch was built on concrete pads instead of being attached to the house so it could settle independent of the house (and avoid paying for a permit). Pressure treated wood was used for the supporting structure and treated pine was used for the decking. The joists were constructed as a box and then slid into place in order for the deck to be a close to the house as possible.
A side hatch was incorporated beneath the porch for the storage of yard tools.
